Welcome from the Principal

Tena Koutou Katoa
Welcome. I am proud of the students, staff, Board of Trustees and community of Rotorua Lakes High School.  I believe “we get the balance right” between high expectations of learning, behaviour, pastoral care and co-curricular participation.

I am impressed by the multitude of ways the mission statement:

“Rotorua Lakes High School will provide excellent education to every student”  is achieved by a commitment to:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Quality Education
  • High Standards of Expectation
  • A Caring Environment
  • Positive Learning Relationships
  • Co-curricular Opportunities
  • Cultural Activities

Why choose Rotorua Lakes High School?

Co-education provides a natural learning environment for young men and women to grow together.  Students from state co-ed schools do better than single sex school students.  “Girls from state co-eds do the best of the lot”, (Hughes, Lauder &Strathdee).  There is no evidence that girls are disadvantaged by co-educational schools.  Indeed the research indicates girls do better in all aspects, including personal self confidence and academic success.

The evidence for boys is quite clear.  Boys do better academically and socially in a co-educational setting.  Boys also report greater enjoyment and higher self esteem as well as exhibiting fewer sexist attitudes. The recent NZCER research finding that boys do better at boys’ schools was commissioned by the Association of Boys’ Schools and researchers, and commentators have questioned the validity of its findings, (see Martin Thrupp’s (Professor of Education at Waikato University) analysis of 20/06/14, entitled Boys’ Schools Research Flawed and Unhelpful, on

Roll Size

Our school size of between 700 and 750 students has been proven through international research to be the size for optimum learning to occur. This is because students are known to staff personally and can build meaningful relationships with their teachers.

Ongoing modernisation has provided high quality, high-technology facilities that meet the needs of learning for the 21st century.  Over the last 2 years the whole school has been completely re-wired and cabled with state of the art ICT infrastructure, as well as the installation of a brand new ICT wireless network. Servers and software are being upgraded to allow fast connectivity and download/upload speeds to provide for the ever increasing number of devices being bought by the school and brought in by staff and students.

By choosing Rotorua Lakes High School, you will be doing the best you can to ensure your child reaches their full potential.  I look forward to meeting you and sharing with you the best kept secret in Rotorua: Rotorua Lakes High School.
